Buying a gun online in Oklahoma and hunting rifles for Oklahoma game

Short answer: You can buy a hunting rifle online and have it shipped to a licensed dealer (FFL) near you. You pick it up there, fill in ATF Form 4473 and pass a NICS background check. For deer in Oklahoma, the wildlife department says you need a centerfire rifle with a soft-nosed or hollow-point bullet of at least 55 grains, and magazine size is not limited.

How buying a rifle online works

An online order is not delivered to your door. The seller ships it to a licensed dealer, and the dealer handles the paperwork when you pick it up.

  • Pick a licensed dealer in your state and give that dealer's details at checkout.
  • At pickup you show ID and fill in Form 4473.
  • The dealer must contact NICS before the transfer is completed and record the result. Federal rules say that if NICS gives no answer, the dealer must wait three business days before transferring, unless NICS has issued a denial (27 CFR 478.102).
  • Federal rules bar a dealer from transferring any firearm to a person under 18. For firearms other than rifles and shotguns, such as handguns, the limit is 21 (27 CFR 478.99).
StepWhat happens
1. OrderChoose the rifle and a local licensed dealer
2. ShipSeller sends it to the dealer, not to your home
3. PaperworkYou show ID and complete Form 4473
4. Background checkDealer contacts NICS before the transfer
5. PickupYou take the rifle home if the check clears

The federal rule on in-person sales to out-of-state buyers says a rifle or shotgun sale to a resident of another state needs the buyer to meet the dealer at the dealer's premises, and the sale must be legal in both states (27 CFR 478.96). This is another reason to use a dealer in your own state.

Oklahoma purchase rules

State purchase rules, such as waiting periods or permits, are not covered on this page. Check current rules with the state attorney general, state police or your dealer.

Hunting basics from the wildlife department

  • Big game: the department's big game regulations page covers deer, elk, antelope and bear.
  • Hunter education: anyone who hunts without an apprentice designation must have hunter education certification unless exempt. People 31 or older are exempt, as are honorably discharged or active-duty U.S. armed forces members and National Guard members.
  • Apprentice designation: hunters 30 or younger without certification must hunt as an apprentice. The accompanying hunter must be 18 or older and hold a hunter education certificate or be exempt. For big game, that hunter must stay within arm's length of the apprentice or close enough to take control of the firearm.
  • Hunter orange: in any antelope, bear, deer or elk season using a firearm, you must wear a head covering and an outer garment above the waist, totaling at least 400 square inches of hunter orange.
  • Tagging: deer, elk, antelope, turkey and bear must be field tagged right away with your name, customer ID number, and the date and time of harvest. Deer must be checked in within 24 hours of leaving the hunt area and before processing.

Season dates and license types change each year. Read the current regulations on wildlifedepartment.com (as of the pages linked below) before you buy a license.

Choosing a rifle for Oklahoma deer

Gun typeOklahoma rule (gun season)
RifleCenterfire, soft-nosed or hollow-point bullet, at least 55 grains
HandgunCenterfire, single bullet, at least 55 grains
ShotgunCenterfire, single slug
Magazine sizeNo restriction, regardless of caliber
Fully automatic firearmsNot legal for hunting
Night vision and lasersLight enhancement devices are barred from sunset to sunrise; laser sights are barred with limited exceptions

Most common deer cartridges meet the 55 grain rule. Beyond that, pick a rifle you shoot well, in a caliber with parts and ammo that are easy to find. A rimfire .22 does not meet the centerfire rule. Public hunting areas can add their own limits, so check the area rules for where you will hunt.

FAQ

Can I have a rifle shipped to my house?

Not from an online seller in the usual case. It goes to a licensed dealer, and you complete Form 4473 and the NICS check there.

Is there a limit on magazine size for deer in Oklahoma?

The wildlife department's big game page says there is no restriction on magazine capacity regardless of caliber. Check the current regulations each season.

Do I need hunter education?

If you are 30 or younger, you need certification or must hunt as an apprentice. People 31 and older are exempt, with the exemptions listed above.
